Mercedes driver George Russell clinched victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, successfully fending off a late challenge from four-time world champion Max Verstappen. The Briton crossed the finish line a mere 0.196 seconds ahead of the Red Bull racer, marking his eighth career F1 win and his first triumph since June’s Austrian Grand Prix. The race, which appeared to be a comfortable cruise for Russell, turned into a tense struggle for survival following two safety car interventions.
Reflecting on his performance, Russell expressed his satisfaction with the result, stating, “It’s amazing to be back on the top step of the podium.” He added that he has felt stronger in every race since the summer break, noting that he finally feels like his old self again. This victory is a significant boost for Russell, as it allows him to reduce the gap in the overall standings against championship leader Kimi Antonelli to 66 points with 15 rounds completed.
Kimi Antonelli, who leads the standings, faced a difficult weekend in Baku after crashing during Friday’s qualifying session, which forced him to start 16th. While the 20-year-old Italian managed a recovery drive, it lacked the explosive pace of his recent charge at Monza; he ultimately settled for fifth place, finishing behind Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton completed the race in sixth, and Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar finished third, marking a successful return to competition following a recent wrist injury. His drive on Saturday was less like his Monza charge — where he went from 19th to first — and more of a slow-burn recovery.
The remainder of the top ten saw a mix of veteran talent and young prospects. Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad claimed seventh place, while the Haas team celebrated a double-points finish with Esteban Ocon taking eighth and Oliver Bearman securing ninth. Carlos Sainz rounded out the top ten for Williams, closing the scoring positions in a race that proved challenging for drivers across the grid.
