Gerald Coetzee is set to end his ODI hiatus this month after being named in South Africa’s 16-member squad for the upcoming three-match series against Australia. The fast bowler has been sidelined from 50-over cricket since the 2023 World Cup due to recurring injury concerns, though he recently managed to bowl a significant number of overs during a four-day match against Bangladesh A to prove his fitness.
The selection comes at a time when South Africa’s pace bowling depth is being tested. Kagiso Rabada is unavailable for the series due to injury, and Nandre Burger remains sidelined. Furthermore, Lutho Sipamla, who was initially selected for the recent tri-series in Namibia, was forced to withdraw after sustaining a hamstring injury. In other roster changes, the selectors have opted to leave out Prenelan Subrayen, Rubin Hermann, and Dewald Brevis from the group that participated in the previous ODI assignment.
Veteran batsman David Miller and Tristan Stubbs have both been recalled to the side. Stubbs, who was absent during the team’s last ODI engagement against India in December, returns to bolster the batting lineup. Additionally, Aiden Markram will be available for selection only for the second and third matches of the series.

The three-match series is scheduled to begin in Durban on September 24, with the subsequent games taking place on September 27 and 30.
