A high-profile player trade involving Hardik Pandya and Arshdeep Singh is moving toward completion between Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings. Both franchises have now exchanged Expressions of Interest (EoIs) as mandated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to facilitate the swap. Following which the BCCI formally allows franchises to engage with players from the other team, sources in the know say the two teams have exchanged EoIs. The contracts are exchanged, once the players give their consent and the financial terms (fees) are agreed upon.
While the deal faced a brief setback when Pandya requested time to weigh his options, the situation has been resolved, with the all-rounder reportedly agreeing to the transfer. Both athletes have provided their consent, and while final contract signatures remain, sources indicate the process has reached its concluding phase. A formal announcement from the BCCI is expected shortly, though potential delays may arise due to ongoing festivities and public holidays in India. With Pandya understood to have sought some time before making a decision, the deal had briefly encountered a delay. The players would invariably have been sounded out well before this stage, while that is the formal procedure.
For Mumbai Indians, acquiring Arshdeep Singh addresses a strategic need for a premium bowler to partner with Jasprit Bumrah. The franchise has sought to bolster its bowling attack after experiencing underwhelming performances from its new-ball options in previous seasons. Arshdeep currently stands as one of India’s premier specialists for both new-ball and death-overs situations.
The move represents a significant shift for Pandya, who will step away from the leadership duties he has held for five consecutive years. After captaining the Gujarat Titans for two seasons and leading Mumbai Indians over the past three years, he will likely join a Punjab Kings side where Shreyas Iyer is firmly established as the captain. Iyer’s success at the helm has also led to his appointment as India’s captain, limiting the need for alternative leadership roles within the Punjab camp.
Despite transitioning into a non-leadership role, Pandya’s experience and versatility are viewed as major assets for Punjab Kings. The franchise continues its long-term quest for a maiden IPL title, having reached the finals only twice—in 2014 and 2025—during their 19-year history. There is currently no indication that a third player will be included in this transaction. Who are still pushing for their first-ever IPL triumph, having made only two finals in 19 years, in 2014 and 2025, his experience and all-round abilities could add considerable value to the Punjab setup.
