Top seed Jannik Sinner continued his imperious run at Roland-Garros with a dominant 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Russia’s Andrey Rublev on June 2, powering into the quarter-finals without dropping a set.
Displaying ruthless efficiency from the baseline, the world No. 1 dismantled Rublev’s game under the lights on Court Philippe Chatrier, barely giving the world No. 15 a foothold in the match. The Italian’s laser-sharp groundstrokes and relentless precision proved too much, extending his Grand Slam winning streak to 18 matches.
Sinner, 23, is chasing his third consecutive major title after his triumphs at the US Open and Australian Open. With 12 straight sets won in Paris so far, he is beginning to look like the man to beat in his quest for a maiden French Open crown.
Rublev, a former conqueror of Sinner—including a win at this same stage in 2022—made a bright start and earned two break points in the opening game. But once Sinner fended off that early threat, he took control and never looked back.
In the first set alone, Sinner committed just three unforced errors and maintained that near-flawless level deep into the second. The third set saw a brief resurgence from Rublev, who played with more freedom and managed to test the top seed. But Sinner remained composed, breaking at 5-4 to seal the match in just over two hours.
“I’m very, very happy because things can turn very quickly in a bad way in best-of-five sets,” Sinner said afterwards. The Italian, who returned to action in May after serving a three-month doping suspension, appears to be peaking at just the right time.
Next up, Sinner will face a very different challenge in the form of Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik, who stunned fifth seed Jack Draper with a dazzling four-set display to reach the last eight.
