French women’s football giants OL Lyonnais have named Jonatan Giráldez as their new manager, succeeding Joe Montemurro, the club confirmed on Monday.
Giráldez, who led FC Barcelona Femení from 2021 to 2024, arrives with an impressive résumé that includes two UEFA Women’s Champions League titles, three Liga F titles, two Copa de la Reina victories, and three Spanish Super Cups.
The Spanish coach has signed a three-year deal with Lyon and joins from NWSL side Washington Spirit. Both clubs operate under the Kynisca Sports International umbrella, owned by Michele Kang.
“The club’s history, ambition, and talented squad represent a fantastic opportunity,” Giráldez said in a statement. “I look forward to building on the club’s successes as it enters a new chapter.”
Lyonnais—formerly Olympique Lyonnais Féminin—are considered the most decorated women’s club in world football, boasting a record eight UEFA Women’s Champions League titles.
Under Montemurro, who was announced as the new head coach of Australia’s Matildas on the same day, Lyon clinched their 18th French league title in the 2024–25 season and reached the Champions League semi-finals.
