As uncertainty surrounds Ange Postecoglou’s future at Tottenham Hotspur, several former players have voiced strong support for the Australian manager, urging the club’s hierarchy to stand by him.
Postecoglou ended Spurs’ 17-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League in May. However, that success was overshadowed by a disastrous domestic campaign, with the team finishing 17th in the Premier League—their worst showing in nearly 50 years. The 59-year-old admitted last month that his future remains unclear, and reports suggest the club will make a decision this week.
Former Spurs defender Ramon Vega, who played 64 league games for the club, criticized the idea of a potential dismissal. “Even considering sacking Ange Postecoglou is incredibly disrespectful,” Vega posted on social media. “He achieved what others with far more experience couldn’t.”
Robbie Keane, another ex-Spurs player, echoed Vega’s sentiments. Speaking to talk SPORT, the former Ireland striker said fans ultimately cared more about silverware than league placement. “Winning a trophy matters most, and Ange delivered. He said he always wins something in his second season—he proved it. Now he deserves time.”
In his debut season, Postecoglou briefly had Spurs at the top of the league last October before their form dipped. They went on to finish fifth and suffered early exits in both domestic cups.
Former Tottenham and U.S. goalkeeper Brad Friedel also weighed in, calling on the club to support Postecoglou in the transfer market. “I hope they keep him and give him a chance to build over the summer,” Friedel told Stats Perform. “Let’s see how things look at the start of next season.”
