DeChambeau, Mickelson Among Big Names to Miss U.S. Open Cut

by Sports Desk

Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau and six-time runner-up Phil Mickelson were among the headline players who failed to make the cut at the U.S. Open on Friday at Oakmont Country Club.

DeChambeau, who was aiming to become the first back-to-back U.S. Open winner since Brooks Koepka in 2018, shot a disappointing seven-over-par 77 in the second round. That left him 10-over for the tournament—three shots above the projected cut line of seven-over.

After a promising opening round, DeChambeau stumbled on Friday with three straight bogeys late on the front nine and never recovered. The powerful American, a crowd favorite, had been a contender at the first two majors of the year.

Mickelson, meanwhile, closed out his latest attempt at completing the career Grand Slam with an eight-over-par total across two rounds. The 2021 PGA Championship winner is in the final year of his five-year exemption into the U.S. Open.

The carnage at Oakmont didn’t stop there. Four of the world’s top 10 ranked players also missed the cut, including Justin Thomas, Ludvig Åberg, Sepp Straka, and DeChambeau.

Other notable names who failed to advance to the weekend included 2019 Open Champion Shane Lowry, former U.S. Open winners Justin Rose and Matt Fitzpatrick, and LIV Golf’s Dustin Johnson.
