The 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been suspended indefinitely amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan, according to a report by Indian news agency PTI.
The decision comes after a match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamshala was abruptly called off due to security concerns. Reports from Indian media claimed that a Pakistani attack occurred in Jammu while the match was ongoing, prompting authorities to cut power across several northern Indian states. The floodlights at Dharamshala Cricket Stadium also went out, leading to the match being abandoned.
In response, the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) convened an emergency meeting with the IPL Governing Council, where it was decided to suspend the tournament until further notice.
Notably, even during India’s national elections or the COVID-19 pandemic, the IPL was never suspended outright—instead, it was relocated to other countries. However, this time, the ongoing military conflict has led to a complete pause in the world’s most popular franchise cricket league.
Speaking to PTI after Thursday’s abandoned match, IPL CEO Arun Dhumal said: “We’re monitoring the situation closely. Things are changing by the minute. So far, we haven’t received any directive from the government. As of now, Friday’s match is expected to go ahead, but this is a fluid situation. All decisions will be taken with the safety of all stakeholders in mind.”
