This season’s Indian Premier League (IPL) has been suspended midway due to the ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan. The franchise tournament has been put on hold for one week, according to an official statement released today by the IPL governing body.
The statement read, “The remainder of the IPL has been suspended for one week. This decision was made after discussions with all stakeholders.”
It continued, “Consideration was given to players, broadcasters, sponsors, and fans. The Indian Cricket Board expresses full confidence in the Indian armed forces and stands by the nation. We thank the military for their action through Operation Sindoor in response to the terror attack.”
The decision follows an abrupt halt to a match in Dharamshala yesterday due to security concerns. The IPL authorities held an emergency meeting shortly after the incident and announced the suspension.
On Thursday, Punjab Kings were playing against Delhi Capitals in Dharamshala when news broke of an alleged attack by Pakistan in Jammu, as reported by Indian media. This led to blackouts across several states in northern India, including the stadium’s floodlights going out. The match was subsequently declared abandoned.
There are still 12 league-stage matches left in the IPL, not including the four playoff games. Although the Punjab-Delhi match was cancelled, points were not shared between the teams. If the tournament resumes, the match may be replayed.
