Following a temporary suspension due to heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to resume today. However, weather might have the final say — rain is expected in Bengaluru, which could wash out the high-stakes clash between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
If Saturday’s match is abandoned due to rain, it could spell the end of the road for KKR in this season’s IPL. The defending champions must win both of their remaining matches to stay in the playoff race. With 11 points from 12 games, Kolkata currently sit sixth on the points table. Two wins would take them to 15 points, giving them a shot at the top four.
But if Saturday’s game is washed out, KKR would only get one point — taking them to a maximum possible total of 14. That would likely not be enough, as several teams are already ahead. Gujarat and Bengaluru both have 16 points, while Punjab have 15. Mumbai and Delhi are close behind with 14 and 13 points respectively, and both teams still have matches to play. Even if the Mumbai vs. Delhi game is also washed out, Mumbai will reach 15 points, surpassing KKR.
Weather conditions in Bengaluru have been unstable for several days, and the forecast for Saturday isn’t promising either. Though skies were clear in the morning, dark clouds loomed over the city. The toss is scheduled for 7:00 PM local time, with the match starting at 7:30 PM.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, there’s a 49% chance of rain at 7:00 PM, which increases to 63% at 8:00 PM and peaks at 71% by 9:00 PM. The chances begin to decline after 10:00 PM, dropping to 40%, and further to 34% by 11:00 PM.
The persistent rain threat has raised concerns over whether a full 40-over game can be played. According to the rules, at least 5 overs per side are required for a match to be considered valid in T20 cricket.
On a positive note, the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium has excellent drainage facilities. If the rain stops, the ground can be made match-ready within 15 to 20 minutes. But with playoff hopes hanging in the balance for KKR, all eyes will be on the skies over Bengaluru tonight.
