England captain Joe Root has publicly expressed his frustration and disappointment following an incident involving fast bowler Brydon Carse at a nightclub in Derby. Speaking at Lord’s on Tuesday, Root admitted he was “hacked off” by the situation, which has drawn attention away from the team’s recent on-field performances.
The controversy began on Saturday night when social media footage emerged showing 31-year-old Carse in handcuffs outside a bar. Although he was briefly arrested and subsequently de-arrested, the incident has led to his removal from the squad for the upcoming second Test against Pakistan.
Root revealed that he held a “strong” conversation with the England players earlier on Tuesday. He noted that while his primary concern was for Carse’s well-being, he is deeply troubled by the recurring pattern of off-field errors. “I don’t think it’s the isolated incident itself, it’s the fact we keep making stupid mistakes away from the game and it’s detracting from what we’re doing on the field,” the captain stated.
According to the England skipper, Carse is “very upset” and “very apologetic” regarding his actions. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has referred the matter to the Cricket Regulator, and Sonny Baker has been called up to replace Carse in the squad for the match starting Thursday.
Carse, who is a centrally contracted player, was not on official England duty at the time, having been released to play for Durham. He was accompanied by teammates Ben Stokes and Matthew Potts, both of whom are also under central contracts.
This event marks the latest in a series of off-field issues involving England players. Over the past year, eight contracted players—representing more than a quarter of the 30-man deal list—have been involved in or present during late-night incidents.
Previous incidents include white-ball captain Harry Brook being punched outside a Wellington nightclub in October, with teammates Jacob Bethell and Josh Tongue present. Additionally, Ben Duckett was filmed appearing intoxicated during the Ashes tour of Australia.
In June, former Test captain Ben Stokes and pace bowler Gus Atkinson were involved in a separate controversy after breaking a team curfew. They were present when a security staff member was assaulted by a Saracens rugby player at a London venue.
Root emphasized that these repeated lapses in judgment are becoming a significant distraction for the team as they prepare for high-stakes international fixtures.
