Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has poked fun at the enduring nature of Manchester City’s legal battle against the Premier League. Following an independent commission’s ruling that found the club guilty of numerous financial regulation breaches between 2009-10 and 2017-18, the club has lodged an official appeal. The charges include inflating revenue via sham commercial agreements and understating costs by over 900 million pounds ($1.19bn) across a decade, alongside failure to cooperate with investigators.
Speaking to Italy’s Corriere dello Sport, the 63-year-old manager remarked on the glacial pace of the proceedings. “I would rather laugh about it,” he stated, adding that while he believes the case will eventually conclude, both parties involved are in their 60s and will need good fortune to witness a final verdict. He cynically noted, “There will be a verdict, then appeals, then more appeals.” “I think we will eventually get an ending, but we are both in our 60s, and we’ll need to be lucky enough to still be around when the final verdict arrives.
Mourinho’s history with the Premier League includes managing Manchester United from 2016 to 2018, where he famously led the team to a second-place finish behind Pep Guardiola’s side in the 2017-18 season. The Portuguese coach has long viewed that achievement as a highlight of his career, given the financial disparity of the era. Given their spending power at the time, mourinho has long maintained that one of his greatest achievements in football management was finishing second behind Guardiola’s side.
In 2024, while managing Fenerbahce, Mourinho humorously claimed he was still waiting for a winner’s medal for that season. He quipped that if Manchester City were punished with a points deduction, United might be elevated to champions. “Then they have to pay me the bonus and give me the medal,” he joked during a Europa League press conference.
The current legal situation remains complex, as the appeal process is set to take place in private. It is not currently clear if any sanctions will be applied before the process concludes or if any penalties will take effect immediately upon a ruling.
Meanwhile, Manchester City continues to lead the Premier League table with 15 points from five matches and is set to face Liverpool on Sunday. As for Mourinho, his current Real Madrid side sits six points behind La Liga leaders Barcelona after seven matches. The Spanish giants are both scheduled for league fixtures this Saturday, with Real hosting Villarreal and Barcelona playing Getafe.
Other upcoming fixtures include Arsenal taking on Leeds on Saturday, while Manchester United will host Tottenham later that same evening.
