Manchester United endured a night of historic shame in European football, suffering a crushing 4-1 defeat at the hands of Italian side Como. This disastrous performance has cast serious doubt over the future of head coach Michael Carrick, whose position now appears increasingly precarious. The Italian club, which previously dismantled RB Leipzig by the same margin, dominated the match from the outset.
The defensive frailties of the Old Trafford side were exposed early when Como scored just 118 seconds into the game. This marked an unwanted milestone for United, as they became the first English club in Champions League history to concede a goal within the opening two minutes in two consecutive matches, following their recent lapse against Atletico Madrid. The vast disparity between the clubs was striking; when Manchester United last lifted the Champions League trophy in 2008, Como was competing in Italy’s fourth tier, Serie D.
Como dictated play throughout the first half, led by Argentine playmaker Nico Paz, who netted a brace and assisted Tasos Douvikas. Jacob Ramon later added a fourth goal with a clinical header. At one point, there were genuine fears that United might surpass their worst-ever European defeat—a 5-0 loss to Sporting CP in 1964. Sensing the collapse, Carrick made drastic tactical changes before the second half, substituting 110 million pound signings Matheus Cunha and Andrey Santos. Later, captain Bruno Fernandes was also withdrawn for Joshua Zirkzee.
Manchester United’s only consolation came in the closing minutes, when Joshua Zirkzee netted a goal from an Amad Diallo cross after breaking the offside trap. The final whistle brought scenes reminiscent of November 2021, when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sought forgiveness from the fans following a 4-1 defeat to Watford, shortly before his dismissal. As Carrick stood before the disgruntled supporters, repeatedly clasping his hands in an apology that bypassed his players, the immediate question became whether he faces the same fate as his predecessor within the next 24 hours.
