Manchester United’s Under-16 squad experienced a historic setback during their latest campaign at the Hong Kong Jockey Club Youth Football Academy Summit. Playing their opening match of the trip on Friday, the young Red Devils faced off against Kitchee, the reigning Hong Kong Premier League U18 champions.
The fixture, which is part of an annual cultural and football exchange program, drew a crowd of more than 4,000 spectators. The United players were tasked with adapting to challenging, humid weather conditions and playing against older, more physically developed opposition, both of which are significant departures from their typical environment in the United Kingdom.
Kitchee signaled their intent early, creating a dangerous opportunity in the second minute. Goalkeeper Marley Irving fumbled a corner kick, but Jack Waters was on hand to clear the rebound off the goal line. The reprieve was brief, however, as Kitchee recycled the resulting corner with a high, looping delivery that Irving again struggled to handle, allowing the local side to capitalize.
The pressure on the visitors intensified in the 22nd minute. After Estan Chisnall-Devent lost his footing near the halfway line, Kitchee launched a swift counter-attack that resulted in a clinical finish into the bottom corner. Although the scoreline threatened to widen, United were spared further damage when a second Kitchee goal was disallowed by VAR for offside.
Despite controlling the majority of possession throughout the first half, United found themselves constantly threatened by Kitchee’s pace on the break. The Red Devils’ best opportunity before the interval fell to Mane Soares, who connected with a cross from Chisnall-Devent, only to be denied by a sharp save from the Kitchee goalkeeper.
Following the restart, United continued to push for an equalizer and forced a double save from the Kitchee keeper after Chisnall-Devent surged past two defenders to fire an initial strike. The match grew increasingly physical, with both teams engaging in hard-fought challenges that eventually led to a crucial free-kick opportunity for United on the right flank.
Jed Bangura delivered the set-piece into the penalty area, and after an initial clearance attempt failed, Locclan Harrison smashed the ball into the roof of the net to level the score at 1-1. Late in the game, Harrison had a golden opportunity to secure a victory when he slipped past the defense, but he lost his footing just as he prepared to shoot.
With the score deadlocked at 1-1, the match proceeded to a penalty shootout to determine the winner. Both goalkeepers made significant saves early in the sequence. While Gus Murdock and Bangura successfully converted their spot-kicks, United ultimately fell 3-2 in the shootout.
Despite the disappointing result, the individual performance of Estan Chisnall-Devent was recognized with the man of the match award, which was presented to him by former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam.
This result marks the first time Manchester United has suffered a defeat at the Hong Kong Jockey Club Youth Football Academy Summit. The squad is now shifting their focus toward Sunday, where they are scheduled to face the Hong Kong U16 national team.
The United starting lineup featured Irving, Akinsanya, Murdock, Harrison, Waters, captain Nyoni, Bangura, Soares, Wright, Chisnall-Devent, and Okeke. The bench included Hartley, J. Mantato, Deighton, Fagborun, Marsden-Umebuani, Houghton, Millward, Mills, M. Ibragimov, and Mullings.
The event continues to serve as a high-profile platform for youth development, though the young United side will be looking to bounce back from this historic loss in their upcoming fixtures.
In front of a crowd of over 4,000, the United players got the chance to test themselves against older opposition and experienced extremely hot and humid conditions, which they are not used to in the United Kingdom.
The first big chance for United fell to Mane Soares from Chisnall-Devent’s cross, and the diminutive winger forced a big save from the keeper as the score remained 1-0 at the break.
The match ended 1-1 with penalties required to determine the winner.
