The long-awaited opportunity for Mehidy Hasan Miraz to play in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) has finally arrived. Although the Bangladeshi all-rounder was signed as a replacement player back in 2017, he never had the chance to take the field. Now, nearly a decade later, that door has fully opened for him as he joins the Guyana Amazon Warriors.
Miraz has been brought into the squad to replace Afghan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi. Additionally, Pakistani wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Haris has joined the team, filling the spot vacated by Rahmanullah Gurbaz. Both Nabi and Gurbaz are departing the CPL to fulfill national team commitments, as Afghanistan is scheduled to play a three-match T20 series against India starting September 13.
The Guyana Amazon Warriors have been in exceptional form this season, winning 10 out of their 11 matches across the Global Super League and the CPL. Much of this success is attributed to Nabi, who currently stands as the leading wicket-taker among spinners in the CPL with 12 wickets in six innings, maintaining an impressive economy rate of under six. Stepping into this role presents a significant challenge for Miraz.
While Miraz is a cornerstone of the Bangladesh national team in Test and ODI formats, his role in T20 cricket remains a work in progress. Since his T20I debut in 2017, he has featured in 34 matches for his country, with his most recent appearance dating back to July 24 of last year against Pakistan. Cricket fans and analysts are now eager to see how the 26-year-old performs when he finally makes his long-awaited debut on the Caribbean stage.
