Mike Hussey is set to rejoin the Australian coaching staff for key international assignments. Cricket Australia has confirmed his appointment as a consultant coach for both the 2027 Ashes series and the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. Beyond these major events, he will serve as a T20 advisor, covering the development cycle leading up to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the 2028 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Mike has extensive T20 experience and we look forward to the impact that he will have on the team as we prepare for the LA Olympics and T20 World Cup in 2028.

This formal return to the national team follows the conclusion of his eight-year tenure as the batting coach for the Chennai Super Kings. Hussey had been with the IPL franchise since 2018 but departed this year during the team’s comprehensive coaching staff restructuring. The appointment comes soon after Hussey’s eight-year stint as CSK’s batting coach came to an end.

Hussey’s new responsibilities commence later this month during Australia’s T20I series against England. His remit is broad, encompassing campaign strategy, opposition analysis, player scouting, and performance evaluation. Ben Oliver, General Manager of National Teams, noted that with a congested Test schedule over the next year, Hussey’s expertise will be vital in providing focused T20 support to management and selectors. Coaches and selectors to provide additional T20 support during this time,” Oliver said, with a heavy schedule of Test cricket over the coming 12 months Mike will work closely with team management.

Head coach Andrew McDonald welcomed the appointment, emphasizing that Hussey’s deep experience as both a player and a coach across global formats provides a complementary skill set for the current group. McDonald noted that Hussey’s personal qualities and proven expertise are highly valued assets for the team.

Reflecting on his new appointment, Hussey expressed excitement about stepping into a more meaningful role. Having previously contributed to the staff during Australia’s past campaigns and serving as a consultant for England’s 2022 T20 World Cup victory, he hopes to add value to the current playing and coaching groups through this upcoming, challenging period. I am extremely excited about being a part of the team in a more formal and meaningful role in the coming years,” he said. “This team has achieved so much in recent times, to which I hope I can add value to the coaching.
