NASCAR has officially confirmed its return to Naval Base Coronado in 2027. Both the Cup Series and the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series are scheduled to compete on the Southern California course for a second consecutive year. A notable adjustment for the 2027 event is the scheduling; the race will take place on August 1, serving as the championship round for NASCAR’s In-Season Challenge. This five-race midseason tournament features 32 drivers vying for a $1 million prize.
The organization also unveiled a broader strategy to expand its footprint by hosting races at various military installations beginning in 2028. NASCAR Chief Operating Officer Ben Kennedy noted that this initiative was sparked by discussions with Secretary of Defense (War) Pete Hegseth during the inaugural race weekend at Coronado. Kennedy stated, “He obviously loved the event, enjoyed the event and that helped spur conversations around what the future relationship might look like with them.”
According to Kennedy, the long-term plan involves rotating these events among different military sites. While specific locations and dates for the 2028 expansion remain under review, NASCAR is actively evaluating priority markets where the sport currently lacks a significant presence, alongside iconic installations. This strategic move aims to leverage the success of the Coronado event to foster deeper ties with the armed forces.
Reflecting on the inaugural success, Corey Heim secured his first career Cup victory at the Coronado track during the Anduril 250 on June 21. Meanwhile, the schedule for 2027 will see the Craftsman Truck Series depart from the Coronado circuit. Instead, the Truck Series will head to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Clarington, Ontario, for a race in September. The report also notes that additionally, NASCAR announced plans to hold more races at military sites beginning in 2028.
