Newcastle United have finalized the signing of Belgium international Matias Fernandez-Pardo from Lille, with the transfer fee set at an initial £51.4m. The 21-year-old forward arrived on Tyneside on Monday evening to undergo a medical examination and finalize the terms of his long-term contract.
The move marks the end of a long-standing pursuit for the Magpies, who had identified the attacker as a priority target during the tenure of former head coach Eddie Howe. His recruitment aligns with the club’s ongoing strategy of targeting high-potential talent within the 21-and-under age bracket.
Reflecting on his move, Fernandez-Pardo expressed his enthusiasm, stating he was “very proud to be at such a big club.” He highlighted the influence of head coach Matthias Jaissle during negotiations, noting, “He really showed how much he wanted me to be here,” which made his decision straightforward. The youngster added that he is eager to continue his professional development at Newcastle and is looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere at St James’ Park.
Fernandez-Pardo’s departure from Lille followed a period of tension, as he was recently excluded from the squad for a 2-2 draw against Paris St-Germain and instructed to train away from the senior team while his transfer status remained unresolved.
His statistical profile from the previous season underscores why he was a primary target. Among players aged 21 and under across Europe’s top five leagues, he ranked second for big chances created (21), fifth for touches in the opposition box (184), and fifth for shots on target (30). Furthermore, he placed seventh in combined goals and assists, tallying 13 in total.
Head coach Matthias Jaissle praised the new arrival’s versatility across the frontline, describing him as a “highly technical player with explosiveness in his game.” Jaissle emphasized that the forward possesses the courage to take on defenders and the ability to both score and create opportunities.
