Manchester United may be in dazzling form in the Europa League, but their Premier League campaign tells a completely different story. Despite reaching the semifinals of the European competition with impressive performances, Ruben Amorim’s side continues to falter in domestic league matches.
On Sunday (11 May),United fell to a 2-0 defeat at home against West Ham United at Old Trafford. Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen scored the goals for the visitors. With this loss, the iconic club slipped further down the league table.
The win marked West Ham’s first Premier League victory at Old Trafford since 2007. West Ham now sit in 15th place with 40 points from 10 wins and 10 draws in 36 matches. United, with the same number of wins (10) but only 9 draws, are now one point behind at 39, having dropped to a lower position on the table.
United are currently enduring a miserable run in the Premier League—winless in their last seven games, with five of them ending in defeat. It marks one of the club’s worst spells in recent history.
While their domestic struggles continue, Manchester United have looked like a different team in the Europa League. After a dramatic comeback win against Lyon in the quarterfinals, Bruno Fernandes, Rasmus Højlund, and company dominated both legs of the semifinal against Athletic Bilbao.
Now, United are through to the Europa League final, where they will face Tottenham Hotspur on May 21 in a bid to claim the European title.
