Michael Carrick is facing intensifying scrutiny as Manchester United’s poor start to the season continued with a 2-0 defeat against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. The loss marks a five-game winless streak across all competitions for the English club, leaving the manager under significant pressure. Spotlight intensifies on under-fire head coach. The visitors suffered an immediate setback at the Estadio Metropolitano, conceding within 53 seconds. Pablo Barrios scrambled the ball home following a deflection off Ayden Heaven, facilitated by sharp play down the left flank from Alex Baena. Despite the early blow, United attempted to respond, though major opportunities were squandered by Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes. Who were missing some key names through injury ahead of their trip to the Estadio Metropolitano, bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes spurned big chances for United.
United’s defensive struggles were further complicated by a controversial red card for Leny Yoro. The defender was dismissed by VAR after being adjudged to have committed an illegal challenge on Jonathan David as the last man, denying a clear goalscoring opportunity. Before the dismissal, United were fortunate to remain within one goal when a strike from Johnny Cardoso was disallowed due to a handball by Marcos Llorente. With the VAR adjudging the Frenchman to have hauled David down illegally and as the last man to deny a clear goalscoring opportunity, that wasn’t before Yoro had been given his marching orders in dubious circumstances.
The victory for Atletico was secured by substitute Ademola Lookman, who capitalized on a rebound after goalkeeper Senne Lammens spilled an initial effort from Jonathan David. The result leaves Manchester United struggling for consistency as they look ahead to upcoming fixtures.
