Ravindra and Chapman Return for New Zealand ODI Series

Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman have been named in New Zealand’s 21-player squad for the upcoming home ODI series against India this November. The batting duo returns to the setup after being sidelined from the preceding Twenty20 International matches due to physical setbacks. Ravindra, a left-handed batter, sustained a dislocated shoulder while attempting a catch at a promotional event last month, while Chapman is currently managing a hamstring injury. Likewise, Chapman will miss the 20-over matches with a hamstring injury.

Coach Rob Walter has opted for an expansive 21-man roster to navigate the five-match ODI schedule that follows the T20 series. The squad selection is rotational: only six players, including captain Mitchell Santner, are scheduled to participate in the entire series. Eight squad members will feature exclusively in the first three matches before departing to focus on the subsequent two-Test series against India. A separate group of seven players will then join the squad for the final two ODIs.

The later matches will see the return of Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, and pace bowler Lockie Ferguson. These three players have primarily focused on professional T20 leagues and have not played 50-over international cricket for New Zealand in the last 18 months. Walter noted that the ODI series serves as a critical opportunity for players to stake their claim for selection in next year’s World Cup.

Reflecting on the squad depth, the coach expressed his appreciation for the versatility of the group. “We’re incredibly lucky to have the depth that we do to have 21 players involved in the series,” Walter stated. He emphasized the importance of reintegrating established players, adding, “It’s also great to bring guys like Lockie, Finn, and Tim back into the one-day unit. For Finn and Tim in particular, we’ve seen what they can do in the T20 arena, and it’s now a great opportunity for them to push their case in the longer format.”
