England’s director of cricket, Rob Key, has indicated that pace bowler Brydon Carse could resume his international career, provided the resolution of current disciplinary proceedings favors his return. The 31-year-old, who has earned 14 Test caps and appeared in 44 white-ball fixtures, is currently facing charges from the Cricket Regulator for potential breaches of England and Wales Cricket Board professional conduct regulations. Announced on Monday, the 31-year-old is among 39 players named in England’s updated list of contracted players.

Status of the investigation and selection

The disciplinary action follows an incident occurring outside a Derby nightclub this past August. Although Carse was initially arrested by Derbyshire Police, he was later de-arrested with no further action taken by local authorities. Despite his availability for selection, the bowler has remained absent from recent international squads, choosing to step back from the game temporarily following the event.

Contract and future outlook

  • Carse remains a part of England’s
  • His existing two-year agreement, signed in 2024, is scheduled to remain in effect through the autumn of 2027.

Speaking on the Test Match Special podcast, Key clarified that a return remains contingent on the final verdict regarding the Regulator charge. He expressed frustration at the frequency of off-field distractions, stating: “Myself, like a lot of people who work for the ECB, you get in these jobs to make some decisions that help English cricket and you also want players to be able to maximise their potential and have great careers. You don’t get in them to sit on calls about all the things that have happened off the field over the last bit.” When asked specifically if the Durham player would represent England again, Key responded: “Yeah, I can do, depending what happens with the outcome of that. As far as Brydon Carse is concerned, we’ll find out what happens in the near future, and there’s a chance he can come back and play for England.”
