Jamaican sprinter Oblique Seville and American Melissa Jefferson-Wooden delivered commanding performances to win the 100m events at the Silesia Diamond League. Seville clocked a meet record of 9.83 seconds, leading a podium that included Americans Kenny Bednarek at 9.87 and Christian Coleman at 9.93. In the women’s race, Jefferson-Wooden secured victory in a season’s best 10.78 seconds, overcoming Olympic champion Julien Alfred, while Sha’Carri Richardson finished third with a time of 10.96.
Armand ‘Mondo’ Duplantis maintained his dominance in the pole vault despite an uncharacteristic series of three failures. He eventually cleared 6.20m to take the top spot, finishing ahead of Norway’s Sondre Guttormsen and Greek athlete Emmanouil Karalis, who both cleared 6.00m to claim silver and bronze respectively.
A highlight of the meet was the men’s 400m hurdles, where Brazil’s Alison Dos Santos triumphed in 46.43 seconds, the sixth-fastest time in history. His performance eclipsed the previous meet record of 46.82 set by Karsten Warholm last year. Reflecting on the intense competition, Dos Santos noted, “I expected a fast race, the lineup was amazing — everybody was here. I knew that to win here I had to give my best.”
In the men’s 1,500m, Jakob Ingebrigtsen made his return to the distance after a two-year hiatus, finishing fourth in a race won by American Ethan Strand in 3:30.77. Kenya’s Phanuel Kipkosegi Koech and Olympic champion Cole Hocker rounded out the top finishers. Ingebrigtsen, who recently won European 5,000m gold, remarked, “I felt a little rusty at the beginning, then a little better as the race went on. Every day I will be stronger.”
Canadian athletes Ethan Katzberg and Camryn Rogers continued their momentum from the Tokyo World Championships, winning their respective hammer throw events with marks of 82.92m and 77.09m. Meanwhile, Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic secured the women’s 400m title in 48.87 seconds.
The steeplechase saw an upset as Ethiopia’s Gemechu Godana defeated Morocco’s two-time Olympic champion Soufiane El Bakkali, setting a new meet record of 8:02.74. In hurdle events, Ja’Kobe Tharp won the men’s 110m in 13.05 seconds, and Alaysha Johnson took the women’s short hurdles in 12.52.
Rounding out the field events, Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikh equaled the meet record in the high jump by clearing 2.00m. On the track, Botswana’s Busang Collen Kebinatshipi delivered a standout performance in the 400m, clocking 43.59 seconds to shatter the meet record previously held by Wayde van Niekerk. The report also notes that but there was no such luck for Morocco’s two-time Olympic 3,000m steeplechase champion Soufiane El Bakkali, beaten into second by Ethiopia’s Gemechu Godana, who clocked a meet record of 8:02.74, olympic and 2023 world champion Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic won the women’s 400m in 48.87 seconds.
