Following a historic nine-wicket victory against Australia in Darwin, the Bangladesh cricket team is now focused on securing the series in the upcoming second and final Test. The match is scheduled to begin on August 22 in Mackay. While Bangladesh dominated the opening encounter, left-arm pacer Shariful Islam was sidelined due to an injury. He has now rejoined the squad in Mackay ahead of the second Test, bolstering the team’s bowling options.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday before a practice session, Shariful addressed his absence from the first Test. He dismissed suggestions that he felt unlucky, stating, “I wouldn’t say I was unlucky for not being there. I always prayed for those who were playing, hoping they would give their best so we could win. When we secured that victory, I was happier than anyone else in Bangladesh.” He noted that witnessing such a significant win was a proud moment for the entire nation.
Shariful also reflected on the positive reception Bangladesh’s pace attack has received from former Australian cricketers. Discussing the praise directed at him and teammate Nahid Rana, he remarked, “When legends from other countries speak highly of Bangladeshi players, it is a great sign for us.” Regarding the team’s ambitions for the final match, he was clear about their intentions: “Of course, no team enters a series without wanting to win it. We are aiming for the series victory, and God willing, we will give our best effort to achieve that.”
The pacer also revealed that he has been in contact with former Bangladesh pace bowling coach Allan Donald, who reached out to offer encouragement following his recovery. “He personally sends SMS to everyone. He messaged me as well, saying, ‘You have returned from injury and will play the next match, best of luck to you,'” Shariful shared. As the team prepares for the showdown in Mackay, the focus remains on maintaining the momentum established during their success in Darwin to finalize the series win.
