Thomas Tuchel is set to announce his latest England squad this Friday, facing several tactical and medical dilemmas ahead of crucial Nations League fixtures against Croatia and Spain. Among the primary uncertainties is the status of Chelsea forward Cole Palmer. The 24-year-old was sidelined for all four matches during the previous international window due to a minor injury. While Palmer completed a full 90 minutes for Chelsea against Brentford before that period and started the subsequent game, England’s medical staff is currently assessing his fitness. Whether he is recalled will be a key theme on Friday.
Tuchel’s decision regarding Palmer remains a focal point, particularly following his candid September remarks. At that time, the head coach noted that Palmer was participating while dealing with physical pain and discomfort, while simultaneously missing too many goal-scoring opportunities for the national side. Whether Palmer earns a recall will signal his standing in the manager’s long-term plans.
Injury concerns are impacting several other areas of the squad as well. Bukayo Saka remains unavailable, which could create an opening for his Arsenal team-mate Noni Madueke, who is seeking a recall after a strong run of form. Conversely, Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford remains sidelined with fitness issues dating back to mid-October, and Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah is also considered a major doubt. In defense, Ben White and Djed Spence are aiming for returns after missing the previous selection cycle due to injury. Sport runs down some of the potential candidates for selection.
While core players such as Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, and Declan Rice are considered permanent fixtures, Tuchel is weighing up potential new faces. The likes of Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice and many others are now stonewall selections – but the intrigue is around the remaining few spots still seemingly up for grabs.
Fulham’s 19-year-old midfielder has emerged as a serious candidate for a senior debut. Having previously traveled with the squad for World Cup preparations alongside the likes of Alex Scott, Ethan Nwaneri, and Rio Ngumoha, the teenager has impressed both at his club and with the England Under-21 setup. Tuchel confirmed in his latest press conference that the youngster is nearing a senior call-up, though he faces stiff competition for the number 10 role, a position currently dominated by Bellingham. Will some old faces earn a recall or will there be new faces soon pulling on the England shirt. Scott and Ngumoha have already made their debuts for the senior side and Nwaneri is currently on loan at Borussia Dortmund. The biggest challenge for King will be finding a chance to shine in his favoured number 10 position with Bellingham being England’s best midfielder and the position being one of real strength for the Three Lions. There is a lack of number nines in the English game and the job of being Harry Kane’s understudy is harder than it sounds. Likes to play almost every minute for his country and is the captain, record goalscorer and arguably the best player in Tuchel’s side, the England captain has just won the Ballon d’Or. Tuchel is aware of Lankshear and with a lack of number nines across the age groups it could be an interesting option for a manager who is not afraid of making big calls.
The striker position remains a specific point of interest, as options behind Harry Kane are limited.
While Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been involved in previous squads, he has struggled to make an impact under Tuchel, receiving minimal playing time in the last window.
Consequently, the manager may look toward Middlesbrough’s Will Lankshear.
The 21-year-old has been prolific this season, scoring 15 goals across all competitions, including 13 in the Championship to help Middlesbrough reach the top of the table. Helping Middlesbrough to the top of the division, he has scored 13 goals in as many games in the Championship.
Despite a recent hamstring tweak that kept him out of a match against Wrexham, he could be an intriguing prospect for a manager willing to take risks. He did miss Middlesbrough’s loss to Wrexham on Wednesday with a tweaked hamstring but could return in time for Saturday.
In midfield, Everton’s number 10 is also under consideration, having notably committed to representing England despite interest from the Republic of Ireland. He has been a standout performer for his club, contributing two goals and two assists. Another potential candidate, 28-year-old Dewsbury-Hall, is viewed as a clever technician, though he may need to show more to surpass recent call-ups like James Garner. Dewsbury-Hall, 28, is a clever technician with an eye for a pass and his ability on the ball would likely suit international football.
Finally, Morgan Gibbs-White continues to demonstrate the dedication Tuchel values. After missing out on the initial September squad, the 26-year-old Nottingham Forest midfielder famously left a family holiday to join the group as a late injury replacement. Despite this commitment and his involvement throughout the previous break, his chances of selection may be hampered by his club’s current struggles at the lower end of the Premier League table, particularly given the density of talent in England’s midfield ranks.
