Following a rigorous four-year search, the Washington Freedom franchise has finally secured a permanent home. The D.C.-based team received critical rezoning approval to construct a privately funded, 10,000-capacity cricket stadium on land they own in Frederick, Maryland. This milestone marks the conclusion of one of the most persistent infrastructure pursuits in Major League Cricket (MLC) history, clearing the primary obstacle for the organization.
Since launching their search four years ago, the franchise evaluated between 15 and 20 potential sites across the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. Frederick emerged as the frontrunner approximately two years ago, becoming the central focus of the team’s off-field efforts. This development aligns with the MLC’s long-term infrastructure goals, which mandate that franchises establish their own home venues to ensure the league’s sustainability in the United States.
The project arrives alongside broader momentum for the MLC, following the recent opening of the Los Angeles Knight Riders’ venue in Pomona. That facility, which is slated to host cricket events during the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, serves as another vital piece of purpose-built infrastructure. Freedom officials are currently working toward having their Frederick venue operational for the 2027 MLC season. While they have not provided an absolute guarantee, the plan involves installing a five-pitch square early enough to allow for a full growing cycle through the Washington winter.
On the field, the stadium will serve as a base for one of the MLC’s most successful teams. Washington Freedom became the first franchise to reach three consecutive league finals. After winning their maiden championship in 2024 under coach Ricky Ponting—defeating the San Francisco Unicorns by 96 runs—the team returned to the final in both 2025 and 2026, though they narrowly missed out on the title in those years.
Owner Sanjay Govil’s ambitions extend beyond the U.S.; he recently acquired a 50 percent stake in the Welsh Fire, establishing a partnership with Glamorgan to gain a foothold in The Hundred. He has also expressed interest in investing in Australia’s Big Bash League, aiming to build a global cricket portfolio. However, securing a home in his own market proved to be the most challenging aspect of this expansion.
The franchise’s strategy in Frederick was deeply grassroots. Over the past two years, they held open houses, made presentations to local groups, and engaged with the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary clubs, and neighborhood associations to demonstrate the economic and community benefits of the project. They also highlighted the local demand for the sport, noting that the surrounding region already supports five or six cricket academies with 400 to 500 children. During public hearings, families shared stories of traveling long distances to find adequate facilities, often settling for makeshift baseball fields.
A key component of the proposal involves transforming the site into a community asset. The franchise plans to develop a public riverfront park on the adjacent property, which is currently inaccessible to the public. Freedom has committed to funding, designing, and maintaining this space, which may include walking trails, picnic areas, and boat access. Sanjay Govil expressed his gratitude to the City Council and the people of Frederick, noting that while the vote is a significant step, the team remains focused on the work ahead to build a venue that truly belongs to the community.

The franchise spent the better part of two years educating residents of Frederick about cricket, the scale of its following in the region and what a professional cricket venue could bring to the wider community.
The precise design will be shaped through a public process, but potential uses include walking and biking trails, picnic areas, boat access, farmers markets and cultural festivals.
The concept effectively opens a stretch of riverfront that residents currently cannot access and hands its recreational use back to the community.
