Brazilian football legend Romario has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Franco Baresi, who passed away at age 66 following a battle with cancer. Reflecting on his career, the former striker declared without hesitation that Baresi was the most difficult player he ever faced on the pitch.
The two icons famously clashed during the 1994 World Cup Final in Pasadena, a match that marked a miraculous return for the Italian defender just three weeks after undergoing meniscus surgery. Baresi successfully neutralized Romario’s threat throughout the contest, which ultimately ended in a penalty shootout victory for Brazil.
Romario recalled his early encounters with the defender while playing for PSV Eindhoven, noting that he faced Milan in December 1992 and April 1993. Even then, it was clear to the Brazilian that Baresi was an incredible talent. Although Romario was part of the Barcelona squad that suffered a 4-0 defeat to Milan in the 1994 European Cup Final in Athens, Baresi did not play in that match due to a suspension.
In a social media tribute, Romario expressed his deep sorrow, stating, “Guys, today football woke up a lot sadder with the death of Franco Baresi.” He highlighted that they met again during the 1994 World Cup Final, which he described as one of the most significant matches of their lives. Romario also had the honor of participating in Baresi’s farewell game in 1997, reinforcing his view that the Italian was a symbol of both Milan and the national team, and truly one of the greatest defenders in history.
Concluding his message, the Brazilian legend offered his condolences to the defender’s loved ones. “I send my respect for everything he did for football, and my affection to his family and friends. May the Heavenly Father welcome him in peace. Vale, Baresi,” he wrote.
