World number one Jannik Sinner has officially withdrawn from the upcoming Cincinnati Open, citing persistent discomfort in his right knee. The Italian tennis star confirmed the news on Sunday through a statement released on the ATP website, noting that he reached the decision after extensive consultations with his medical staff and support team.
“After consulting with my doctors and my team, I have to announce that I need to withdraw from the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati,” Sinner stated. He added, “My right knee has been bothering me and even though we have been working hard with my medical team, I have to accept that I’m not ready to compete yet.”
The tournament begins this Thursday, coinciding with the conclusion of the Montreal Masters, an event Sinner also missed. The 24-year-old, a five-time Grand Slam winner, had entered the North American hard-court swing on a six-tournament winning streak at the 1000 level. During his previous withdrawal, he noted the decision was taken to “prioritise my health.”
Sinner’s absence from Cincinnati follows the withdrawal of world number two Carlos Alcaraz, who continues to manage a wrist injury. Both the Cincinnati Open and the Montreal Masters serve as the primary warm-up events for the final Grand Slam of the season, the US Open, which is scheduled to commence in New York on August 30.
