New Atletico Madrid defender Cristian Romero has offered a vote of confidence in his compatriot Julian Alvarez, describing the striker as “really focused” and “eager to keep scoring goals.” Romero, who recently joined the club from Tottenham on a five-year contract worth 40 million euros ($47 million), shared his observations during his official presentation on Thursday. Having spent nearly a week with the squad, the defender noted that Alvarez remains committed to his professional duties despite public comments earlier this summer suggesting he was looking to depart the club amid interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid.
While Atletico Madrid successfully retained the former Manchester City forward, both Argentine players were absent from the team’s 2-0 victory over Malaga in their La Liga season opener this past Wednesday. The pair, who were runners-up in the most recent World Cup, are expected to play pivotal roles in Diego Simeone’s tactical plans. The manager has publicly stated his intention to build the team around Alvarez while emphasizing the importance of Romero’s experience.
Reflecting on his new role, the 2022 World Cup winner revealed that Simeone has tasked him with providing leadership on the pitch. “(Simeone) asked me to be a leader on the pitch, to help my team-mates,” Romero explained. “I hope to be up to the challenge and carve my name into the history of this great club.” The report also notes that julian, I see him doing very well,” Romero told reporters at his presentation after joining from Premier League side Tottenham on a five-year deal for 40 million euros ($47 million).
