MicahJo Barnett, a junior running back for William Jewell College, has died following a medical emergency that occurred on the sidelines during the Division II school’s season opener against Fort Lewis College this Saturday. Liberty, Missouri, police confirmed that emergency personnel stationed at the game provided immediate assistance to the student-athlete approximately 20 minutes after kickoff. Barnett was subsequently transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The tragic event unfolded shortly after Barnett recorded a 1-yard touchdown run with 5:15 remaining in the first quarter, giving the Cardinals a 7-0 lead. Game statistics indicate that Barnett had accumulated 30 yards on six carries before the contest was halted with 4:32 left in the opening quarter, following a punt by Fort Lewis College. In his collegiate career, the Shawnee Mission, Kansas native had appeared in 13 games over two seasons, recording 457 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 108 carries. Prior to joining William Jewell, he was a standout at Liberty North High School, where he earned all-Missouri state honors after tallying 1,450 all-purpose yards and 20 touchdowns during a state championship-winning season.
In response to the loss, the college published a tribute on its football website titled “Jewell Mourns Loss of Football Student-Athlete MicahJo Barnett.” The memorial, which featured a black-and-white photograph of the athlete, included the inscription “Forever a Cardinal” alongside the years 2005-2026. The university expressed its condolences, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers are with MicahJo’s family, our students, the Cardinal Football family, and the rest of our community during this time of loss.”
To support the campus community, William Jewell officials have directed students and staff to utilize the school’s chaplaincy office and counseling services. A vigil honoring Barnett and his family was scheduled for Saturday evening.
