Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane has been named on the 30-player shortlist for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, following a prolific campaign that saw him net 73 goals for club and country. Kane is joined by fellow England internationals Jude Bellingham of Real Madrid and Arsenal’s Declan Rice.
International stars and World Cup impact
Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi is also in contention as he seeks a record-extending ninth Ballon d’Or. The 39-year-old scored eight goals during Argentina’s run to the World Cup final in July, where they were defeated by Spain. Messi has since announced his retirement from international football.
Spanish representation and club dominance
- Lamine Yamal leads a group of six Spanish players nominated following their World Cup triumph.
- Paris St-Germain forward Ferran Torres, who scored the winning goal in the final, is included alongside nine other PSG players, including reigning champion Ousmane Dembele.
- Real Madrid forwards Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr are on the list, as are Arsenal defenders Gabriel and William Saliba.
Ceremony details
The 2026 edition marks the 70th anniversary of the award, which was established by France Football in 1956. The winner will be unveiled during a ceremony in London on 26 October. Organizers noted that the choice of venue is a symbolic tribute to Sir Stanley Matthews, the inaugural winner of the trophy and a legendary figure in English football history.
