Bangladesh currently holds the fourth position in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, with six crucial matches remaining in their campaign. Spin bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed believes that achieving expected outcomes in these upcoming fixtures could secure the team a spot in the WTC final, though he acknowledged that the path ahead remains long and challenging.
Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand presently stand ahead of Bangladesh in the WTC standings. However, a historic nine-wicket victory over Australia in Darwin provided a massive boost to the squad’s confidence. To secure a top-two finish and earn a place in the final, Bangladesh must deliver strong performances in their upcoming series against the West Indies, South Africa, and England.
Addressing the team’s prospects, Mushtaq expressed high optimism about the journey ahead. “Why not? InshaAllah. We are in a great position right now,” he stated, emphasizing that maintaining self-belief and momentum will be key. He added that if the team continues to play good cricket, they have enough time to push all the way to the final.
The national side has already registered memorable Test victories against New Zealand and Pakistan during this cycle. The breakthrough victory on Australian soil further elevated expectations, with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto describing the Darwin win as Bangladesh’s greatest victory in any format of the game.
Mushtaq highlighted mindset as a decisive factor alongside on-field performance, warning that playing with a fear of failure makes it difficult to compete against major teams.
