Manchester City Formally Appeal Financial Rule Violation Verdict

Manchester City have officially lodged an appeal against an independent commission’s decision that found the club guilty of 114 out of 115 charges related to Premier League financial regulations. The violations, which span the period from the 2009-10 to the 2017-18 seasons, were confirmed earlier this week.

In an official statement released on Thursday evening, the club maintained its innocence and characterized the commission’s ruling as flawed. City representatives stated that the decision contained “clear material errors, of law, principle and fact and is unsafe.” The club further claimed to have submitted a substantial volume of evidence that it considers “irrefutable” to support its defense across all contested positions.

The independent panel’s initial findings alleged that the club orchestrated “sham contracts” with various commercial partners. These agreements were reportedly part of a broader scheme to conceal more than £830 million in secret funding. The Premier League has accused the club of systematically violating its rules for nearly a decade.

The Football Association (FA) responded to the verdict on Friday, acknowledging that the decision carries “significant implications for the integrity of the game.” English football’s governing body noted that it is currently reviewing the implications and will pursue appropriate action where necessary.

Regarding the ongoing proceedings between the league and the club, the FA stated that it would not comment further at this time but would keep a close watch on developments. The FA holds overarching powers that could potentially allow for an independent investigation into the matter, which might lead to additional sanctions. We will, however, continue to monitor developments closely.

Reports suggest that as part of the legal challenge, Manchester City intend to argue that several key sponsorship deals were bankrolled by the Abu Dhabi government rather than by the club’s ownership group.
