Defending world champion Marc Marquez secured a crucial win at the Japanese Grand Prix this Sunday, closing the gap on championship leader Jorge Martin to a mere two points. With six rounds remaining in the season, the title race has intensified significantly after Marquez successfully overtook his Spanish rival in Motegi.
Marquez, a seven-time world champion, executed a strategic race to claim victory. After qualifying, he bided his time behind Martin, riding his Ducati with precision before launching a decisive move on lap 11. Once he moved into the lead, he maintained a comfortable pace, leaving Martin to secure second place unchallenged. This win marks Marquez’s sixth grand prix victory this year, a remarkable feat considering he missed events in Le Mans and Catalonia to recover from foot and shoulder surgeries.
The weekend was a dominant display for Marquez, who achieved a double victory by winning Saturday’s sprint race as well. His unconventional pre-race routine, which involved doing press-ups on the tarmac, grabbed attention before he demonstrated his strength on the bike. Conditions in Japan remained dry despite concerns, as sunny skies gave way to cooler, cloudy weather just before the race commenced. A sunny day in Japan clouded over and cooled considerably shortly before the race but the rain held off.
Italian rider Marco Bezzecchi took third place, though he continues to drift further back in the overall standings. Bezzecchi spent much of the race defending his position against compatriot Enea Bastianini, who eventually crossed the line in fourth. Meanwhile, local hope Ai Ogura, aiming to be the first Japanese victor at Motegi since 2004, finished in sixth position.
The race saw mixed fortunes for other competitors. Pedro Acosta, who recently claimed his maiden MotoGP win in Austria, finished the day in seventh. Conversely, Brazil’s Diogo Moreira, who had secured second in the sprint following a penalty handed to Martin, failed to finish after crashing out of the grand prix.
