Southampton manager Tonda Eckert will remain in his position after avoiding an immediate touchline ban for his role in the club’s “spygate” scandal. The 33-year-old coach was issued a six-week suspension from all football-related activities by an independent regulatory commission, but the sentence will remain suspended until the conclusion of the 2027-28 season. In addition to the suspended ban, Eckert was fined 28,000 British pounds and received a formal reprimand. Eckert was fined 28,000 British pounds ($37,000) and given a reprimand but avoided a lengthy ban in the announcement on Wednesday, and he is free to continue in his role at the English Championship club. The 33-year-old accepted full responsibility and was charged by the FA with misconduct.

The FA disciplinary action follows an admission of misconduct by the German coach. An independent disciplinary panel previously found that Eckert had “specifically authorised” clandestine observation of training sessions belonging to opposing teams, including Middlesbrough, during the previous campaign. These breaches resulted in the club being disqualified from the Championship playoff final and deducted four points for the current season.

Following an FA hearing held during the recent international break, officials confirmed that the suspended sanction will be triggered only if Eckert commits further breaches regarding the unauthorized observation of other clubs’ training. The decision allows him to continue his duties immediately, starting with Sunday’s fixture against Portsmouth. “The suspended sanction will come into effect in the event he is found to have committed a breach of rules or regulations by requesting, authorising, taking, or using information from any observation of the training of another club, in whatever guise that observation may take.”.

Southampton expressed relief at the resolution, with club officials stating that the outcome brings a “regrettable period of our history to a conclusion.” The club, currently positioned 13th in the Championship table, emphasized that internal measures have been implemented to prevent future errors in judgment. According to the club, which sits 13th in the Championship,, “measures have been put in place to ensure that such errors in judgement never happen again at our club”.

Owner Dragan Solak welcomed the decision, noting that the club has already endured significant consequences. He expressed confidence that the manager has learned from the matter, stating that the suspended sentence provides a path for Eckert to continue his work. Since his permanent appointment in December 2025, Eckert previously steered the team to a fourth-place finish last season after an challenging start to his tenure.
