Vitinha Strikes Late as PSG Defeat Barcelona 4-2

Paris Saint-Germain solidified their status as heavyweights in this year’s Champions League, defeating Barcelona 4-2 in a high-stakes encounter at the Parc des Princes. The victory marks three consecutive wins for the reigning champions in this season’s competition. Albeit not one that is likely to seriously hurt their prospects of advancing further in Europe’s elite club competition, the defeat is a setback for Barcelona.

The deadlock was broken by Vitinha in the 81st minute. The Portuguese playmaker, who secured a third-place finish in last year’s Ballon d’Or voting, expertly controlled a ball on his chest before unleashing a strike from outside the box to give PSG a 3-2 lead. Shortly thereafter, Fabian Ruiz added a fourth goal from close range to put the result beyond doubt. PSG had the last laugh, though, as they reminded their opponents that they remain the team to beat in Europe this season, with Vitinha making it 3-2 before Ruiz sealed the win from close range.

Barcelona, who entered the match on an impressive 11-game winning streak across all competitions, saw that momentum halted. Despite the defeat, the Spanish side managed to reach a milestone of 50 goals for the current season, with Lamine Yamal netting their second equalizer of the night. But the goals keep coming, and Yamal’s strike here was Barcelona’s 50th of the season all told, that sequence is now over.

The match was a tactical battle featuring several high-profile absences and injuries.

PSG suffered a significant blow just 20 minutes into the game when Ousmane Dembele, the reigning Ballon d’Or winner, left the pitch with a hamstring injury. He was followed by teammate Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who also exited due to injury. Despite these losses, Luis Enrique’s side maintained their rhythm, extending their own winning streak to seven matches. Fresh from winning 4-2 at Manchester City last week, PSG almost scored inside 90 seconds as Kvaratskhelia hit the post, but they were dealt a blow as Dembele came off after just 20 minutes, pulling up with a hamstring injury. Coming on to face the club he left in the summer, who themselves then lost Dani Olmo to injury as the action was interrupted, ferran Torres replaced him. The defender was called into the side to mark Yamal in the absence of usual starting left-back Nuno Mendes.

Desire Doue opened the scoring for the hosts in the 38th minute, capitalizing on a turnover by Yamal to fire a low shot into the corner. This rare goal was Doue’s first since February 2024. Barcelona responded after the break, with Xavi Espart leveling the score at 1-1 following an assist from Fermin Lopez.

The game turned into an intense, open contest in the second half. Lucas Hernandez restored PSG’s lead with a header from a corner, scoring his third goal in over 100 appearances. However, defensive substitute Warren Zaire-Emery faltered under a high ball shortly after, allowing Yamal to find the net for his 10th goal of the season and equalize once more at 2-2. But he was substituted moments later by coach Luis Enrique, and replacement Warren Zaire-Emery was at fault for Barcelona’s second equaliser, that crowned a fine performance for Hernandez.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick opted to leave 2024 Ballon d’Or winner Rodri on the bench for the kickoff, likely with an eye toward their upcoming crucial La Liga clash against Real Madrid, where they hold the potential to extend their lead to nine points. Raphinha did return to the starting lineup following a brief absence.

For PSG, the result serves as a statement of intent following their recent 4-2 victory against Manchester City. Although the fixture was the 14th meeting between the two clubs in the Champions League over the past 13 years, the intensity remained undimmed. With this win, PSG appears well-positioned to advance comfortably to the knockout stages of the tournament.
