Manchester City saw their 100% winning start to the Premier League season come to a halt following a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa. The result has left manager Enzo Maresca facing significant questions regarding his side’s defensive stability, a recurring issue that has seen them manage only a single clean sheet across their previous six matches in all competitions. Nicolas Jackson’s double in a 2-1 home win for Villa means City have now managed only one clean sheet in their past six games and the form of goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and defender Marc Guehi is of concern.
Central to the concerns is the current form of goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and defender Marc Guehi. Statistical analysis shows that since the beginning of last season, both players have been responsible for three errors each that led directly to opposition goals, placing them among the top tier of individual defensive blunders in the league.
While City have faced varied opponents recently, ranging from Champions League contenders like Paris St-Germain to top-flight side Sunderland, their inability to maintain a tight backline is becoming a pattern. Maresca acknowledged the avoidable nature of the mistakes against Villa, stating after the game that both goals conceded were preventable errors, despite his side dominating possession and creating numerous opportunities in the opposition box.
The manager reflected on the balance of the match, noting that while City controlled the game, their lack of clinical finishing paired with defensive lapses proved costly. As the saying goes, “attack wins you games, defence wins you titles.” Currently, City hold a goals-against rate of 1.13 per game; historically, only Manchester United—who recorded 1.16 in 1996-97 and 1.18 in 1999-00—have secured a Premier League title with such a statistically weak defensive record. Arsenal ‘s goals against rate is currently 0.625 per game. But as the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson once said, “attack wins you games, defence wins you titles”, maresca was forced to try different combinations at the back against Villa.
The pressure on City’s backline is amplified by the form of title rivals Arsenal, who moved level on points at the top of the table after securing a comfortable 2-0 victory over Everton. Mikel Arteta’s side has maintained a stingy defensive record, conceding just five goals in eight matches. Their weekend triumph featured strikes from centre-backs Ezri Konsa and Gabriel, and they maintain that consistency despite currently missing key defender William Saliba.
Despite the setback, Manchester City are guaranteed to remain within the top two of the table as the weekend concludes. However, if Maresca intends to sustain a title challenge, addressing the defensive vulnerabilities of his squad remains his most pressing tactical priority.
