Lamine Yamal has emerged as a once-in-a-generation talent, blending audacious skill with an ambitious mindset that has captivated the global football community. Since debuting for Barcelona’s first team three years ago, the 19-year-old winger has rapidly ascended to become one of the sport’s most compelling figures. Now, he is campaigning to secure the Ballon d’Or, which would make him the youngest recipient in the award’s 70-year history. His flair on the football field and flamboyant personality off it have made Yamal one of the sport’s best showmen in recent years. So, how does his bid compare with the other leading contenders.
The teenager’s claim to the prize is bolstered by a historic 2025-26 season. Days after his 19th birthday, Yamal helped Spain clinch the FIFA 2026 World Cup title in North America. This international success complemented a stellar club campaign, where he played a pivotal role in Barcelona’s successful defense of the La Liga title and their victory in the Spanish Super Cup. Across 38 league appearances, he contributed 22 goals and 15 assists. He was also part of the Catalan club’s Spanish Super Cup-winning squad. Singling out Mbappe as his only threat, but Yamal is quite confident of winning the award. Nominated for the third time, Yamal finished runner-up to Ousmane Dembele of PSG in the 2025 Ballon d’Or race. Yamal had 25 goals and 20 assists for club and country.
Yamal faces stiff competition from two established veterans: Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe and Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane.
Mbappe, 27, produced an incredible individual season, tallying 58 goals and 13 assists. However, purely on an individual basis, Mbappe’s statistics are far better than Yamal’s.
He dominated the scoring charts in both La Liga and the Champions League, secured the World Cup’s Golden Boot, and set a new all-time scoring record with 22 goals in that competition.
Meanwhile, 33-year-old Harry Kane enjoyed a prolific run, netting 73 goals last season, the highest tally since Lionel Messi’s 82-goal campaign in 2011-12. But Yamal believes simply registering the maximum goals cannot be the criterion for the prize, kane’s incredible goal-scoring prowess – even at the age of 33 – is hard to ignore.
The race for the 2026 Ballon d’Or is viewed as one of the closest in decades.
While acknowledging his rivals’ statistics, Yamal remains steadfast in his own candidacy.
During an interview on Movistar Plus, he asserted his status among the elite, stating, “For me, Mbappe and me, we’re the two best players in the world. I honestly think that, as the best in the world, maybe there are two of us, and this year I would deserve it because of what I’ve won.”
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick, while noting he would prefer his young star avoid such public pronouncements, conceded that this attitude reflects Yamal’s exceptional self-belief. “He’s exceptional… He has self-confidence; he wants to win the Ballon d’Or,” Flick remarked. Having already won the Kopa Trophy for best young talent twice, Yamal is now looking to ascend to the sport’s highest individual honor.
Despite his confidence, Yamal’s approach to the criteria for the award is clear. He argued that total goals should not be the sole metric for success, seemingly aimed at Kane’s prolific output. “The Ballon d’Or should go to the best player in the world, full stop. Not to a player who has scored 80 goals, because if you score 80 goals, you get the top scorer award for that. Those are two completely different things that people do not understand.” Those are just a few words that best encapsulate Lamine Yamal’s appeal.
The final decision rests with a jury of journalists representing 100 countries. Their collective votes will determine if Yamal can make history by surpassing Brazilian legend Ronaldo Nazario, who was 21 when he claimed the trophy in 1997. As the London ceremony approaches, the battle pits three distinct generations of talent against one another, with the teenager’s trophy-laden season serving as the cornerstone of his argument. One in his 20s and one in his 30s, it is an interesting contest between three players in three different stages of their careers: one in his teens. He is confident that the trophies in his portfolio will help him beat the Frenchman, who has had no luck with silverware, while Yamal has publicly pitted himself against Mbappe in the battle.
