Following a disappointing tri-series campaign, the Bangladesh national cricket team has returned home to prepare for a crucial ICC World Test Championship series against the West Indies. Speaking at a press conference two days ahead of the opening match, Bangladesh head coach Phil Simmons outlined the team’s overall preparation and addressed recent on-field and off-field developments surrounding the squad.
Simmons Expects a Tough Series Against West Indies
Sharing his expectations for the upcoming fixtures, Simmons stated that he arrived the previous night and had not yet inspected the pitch. He emphasized that his primary requirement from the squad is sheer hard work throughout the series. The head coach highlighted that he anticipates a very challenging contest, noting that the West Indies played two home series prior to their recent tour of India and performed exceptionally well. Because their opponents are coming off extensive international match practice in India, Simmons stressed that Bangladesh must be fully prepared to produce their best cricket.
Disrupted Preparation and Scheduling Challenges
The upcoming series carries significant weight for Bangladesh in the World Test Championship standings. However, due to the overlapping tri-series schedule, several key players who participate in both ODIs and Tests faced delayed arrivals for Test training. Simmons acknowledged that having a split squad during preparation is “আদর্শ নয়” (not ideal).
“We didn’t get the whole team because we were in the middle of a series. We were in the middle of a tri-series and coincidentally several of our players who play both ODIs and Tests were busy there,” Simmons explained. “It’s not a completely ideal situation, but the boys were not sitting idle; they were playing cricket. So there is still a lot to do. We only have these two days to gather everything together as a full squad.”
Despite the short window, Simmons emphasized that his squad remains fully focused on delivering top-tier performances, adding: “তবে নিজেদের সেরটা দিতে সিমন্স এবং তার দল প্রস্তুত” (Simmons and his team are ready to give their best).
Off-field Changes and Management Discussions
Preparation for the series has seen significant off-field movement. Just three days before the series opener, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) removed Mohammad Ashraful from his role as national team batting coach, appointing Mohammad Salahuddin as an interim replacement. When asked by journalists whether it was fair for team management to make such a coaching change right before a series, Simmons declined to comment directly on the administrative decision, stating, “I don’t think this is a question for me to answer.”
In addition to the coaching swap, BCB chief Tamim Iqbal held high-level meetings two days prior to the match with five senior cricketers and members of the team management. Addressing media inquiries regarding whether these meetings and coaching shifts would cause off-field chaos that disrupts the team’s performance, Simmons dismissed the notion that it would act as a distraction.
“Is this the first chaos before a match? No, right? Every series is important,” Simmons remarked. “What happens outside is not important; what matters is how we prepare as a team. I was present at the meeting. The meeting was mainly about what steps we need to take to move Bangladesh cricket forward. It was a very good meeting where we discussed how to develop young players and push Bangladesh cricket forward in other aspects. It was not an obstacle for preparation because it was not about the series itself.”
Injury Updates on Nahid Rana and Litton Das
Bangladesh will be without fast bowler Nahid Rana, who has performed exceptionally well in recent home Test series but is sidelined for this series due to an injury. Simmons acknowledged the impact of missing such a key pacer while expressing confidence in the squad’s depth.
“When you have a talent like Nahid in the team, you will miss him, and we miss him. Remember, we won in Australia without Nahid, and we won away from home. We have played good cricket without Nahid as well. We will miss him, but maybe someone else will step up and do the job he was supposed to do. Maybe not at that exact pace, but they will get the job done,” Simmons noted.
Meanwhile, uncertainty remains regarding the availability of wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das due to an ongoing injury concern. Providing the latest status on Litton’s condition, Simmons confirmed: “As far as I know, Litton Kumar is available. If the situation changes over the next two days, I will inform everyone, but at this moment, he is available.”
