The selection process for the 2026 award was notably tight, with Kane ultimately edging out Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe and Barcelona’s Yamal, who finished second and third, respectively.
The Critique of the Selection
In a candid interview with the Spanish radio program El Larguero Abdellaoui expressed his disappointment regarding the outcome.
He argued that while Kane is a proficient goalscorer, his nephew’s impact on the pitch was superior. “Everyone knows” that Yamal was the standout performer, according to Abdellaoui, who emphasized that those who appreciate the aesthetic of football gravitate toward watching the young Spaniard rather than the English forward.
Career Context and Comparisons
Abdellaoui’s commentary took a sharp turn when he implied that the voting committee likely considered the remaining duration of Kane’s professional life.
He noted that because Yamal is only 19, voters often dismiss him by claiming he has more time ahead, whereas they chose to honor Kane because he has “only three days of football left.
The uncle maintained that the trophy was effectively a parting gift rather than a reflection of the best performance in the world.
