Bangladesh’s campaign at the Hong Kong Sixes has hit a rough patch, as the team failed to maintain consistency in their opening matches. After falling short in a tight contest against Scotland, where they scored 94 runs but were defeated on the final ball, Sabbir Rahman and Rony Talukdar’s side suffered a second consecutive loss. Their latest setback came against Sri Lanka, who managed a dramatic one-wicket victory in a high-scoring encounter, marking the second-highest successful run chase in the tournament’s history.
Opting to field first after winning the toss, Sri Lanka struggled initially against the explosive opening partnership of Habibur Rahman Sohan and Sabbir Rahman. The duo dominated the bowling attack, piling on 95 runs for the opening stand. Sabbir was dismissed for 39 off just 12 deliveries, striking one four and five sixes. Sohan was even more destructive, racing to 53 runs in 14 balls with the help of two fours and seven sixes before retiring according to the tournament rules.
Drawing on their previous experience against Scotland, the team sent Sohan back to the crease, where he remained unbeaten with 57 off 15 balls. A late cameo from Mrittunjoy Chowdhury, who scored 14 runs from just three balls, helped propel Bangladesh to a formidable total of 127 for 4 in their allotted six overs. Despite the imposing target, Bangladesh’s bowling lineup could not contain the relentless Sri Lankan hitters.
Sri Lanka chased down the target with four balls to spare, fueled by a sensational performance from Vishan Halambage. After hitting a half-century and temporarily leaving the field, he returned under pressure to steer his side to victory. Halambage delivered an incredible unbeaten knock of 80 runs off 17 balls, featuring 11 sixes and three fours. This victory was sealed in the final over, leaving Bangladesh empty-handed once again.
Despite this defeat, Bangladesh’s journey in the Hong Kong Sixes continues. Placed third in Group B, the team will now transition to the Bowl round, where they are set to face the third-placed team from Group D. Potential opponents include Oman, South Africa, or Afghanistan. Per tournament regulations, group runners-up will move to the Plate round, while group champions will advance to the semi-finals. Fans are hopeful that the squad will rectify their past errors and showcase their true potential in the upcoming matches.
