Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has issued a stark reality check to the club following a disappointing 4-1 defeat against Como in Italy. The result has extended the team’s winless streak to seven consecutive matches across all competitions, leaving the squad in what the midfielder described as a deeply difficult period. Extending the club’s winless run to seven games across all competitions, united sank to a new all-time low as Como humiliated them. Following the final whistle, tensions were evident as Fernandes and manager Michael Carrick were involved in a heated exchange. Wayne Rooney destroys ‘selfish’ Bruno Fernandes as Michael Carrick sack decision looms TEAMtalk.
The atmosphere remains strained at Old Trafford, with United having managed only two victories throughout the current season.
While Carrick is slated to lead the team for the upcoming match against Bournemouth, speculation regarding his future persists given the mounting pressure on the coaching staff. And there is already talk that United are considering replacements, carrick is under massive pressure.
The internal discord was highlighted by contrasting post-match critiques. While Carrick publicly questioned the players’ intensity and overall commitment on the pitch, Fernandes appeared to challenge the team’s tactical setup. In his comments to Sky Italy, the captain emphasized that the club must abandon its reliance on past glories, noting that the team is no longer the serial winner expected by supporters. During an interview with TNT Sports, Carrick cast doubt on his players’ commitment, levelling the accusation that they did not run enough or defend with the required intensity. Fernandes, on the other hand, aimed a dig at Carrick’s tactical decisions, seemingly blaming them for the team’s chastening loss. The most important thing is that we’re not performing as we expect.
Regarding his own substitution, Fernandes admitted that he was frustrated to leave the match, especially given the scoreline.
He noted that the team struggled significantly to maintain possession or play effectively in the opponent’s half.
He specifically pointed to Como’s brave man-to-man pressing strategy, which United failed to counteract, allowing their opponents to exploit gaps between the defensive lines.
Reflecting on the wider organizational issues, Fernandes stated: “Everyone at the club must understand that it’s no longer the same. We are no longer in the past and we must look to the future. We must create something different in the present. At this club, we focus too much on what was achieved in the past, but we are no longer the same. The club and the players must understand this.”
The Portuguese international acknowledged the difficulty facing the current squad, particularly for those who joined with the expectation of competing for top-tier honors. The Portugal international said, “It’s a very difficult moment for us, we’re not getting the points and results we want.
This criticism follows recent comments from Lisandro Martinez, who publicly expressed frustration with the club’s board regarding their failure to sufficiently bolster the roster during the summer window. Fernandes’ remarks come off the back of Lisandro Martinez ‘s outburst in which he called out the board for failing to adequately strengthen the squad in the summer.
Amidst these professional struggles, reports have also emerged concerning a burglary at Fernandes’ residence during the match.
