‘Shutdown’ in Pakistan cricket

by Sports Desk

The PSL had already been suspended. Efforts were made to complete the remaining 8 matches in the UAE, but these attempts were unsuccessful. After that, Pakistan announced that due to the worsening situation at the border, the tournament would be postponed indefinitely. However, this setback seems far from over for Pakistan cricket.

Following the suspension of the PSL, Pakistan has now also halted three more domestic cricket tournaments. The ongoing President’s Trophy Grade-2, Inter-Region Challenge Cup, and Inter-Region Under-19 One-Day Tournament have been suspended. A statement from the PCB mentioned that these suspensions were due to the “current security situation in the country.”

The statement further mentioned that these tournaments would resume in the future, and the remaining schedules for these events would be released soon. However, no specific timeline has been given for their resumption.

Due to the military conflict between India and Pakistan, both countries’ cricketing activities have come to a standstill. The IPL in India and the PSL in Pakistan were both halted. While India is keen to resume the IPL by Friday, media sources suggest that foreign players will be brought back by Tuesday.

On the other hand, the situation in Pakistan has not improved yet. A total of four tournaments, including the PSL, have been postponed. The Bangladesh national team was scheduled to tour Pakistan later this month, but that now faces uncertainty. The PCB has stated that the resumption of the PSL and other cricket events will depend on further instructions from the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif.

The President’s Trophy Grade-2 tournament is a three-day first-class match series that began in mid-April. It was scheduled to run until the last week of May. The other two tournaments were set to take place throughout the month of May.
