Changes in Pakistan cricket have almost become a routine reality—whether it’s a new coach, a captaincy switch or administrative reshuffling, transitions seem constant. Most recently Mike Hesson was appointed as Pakistan’s white-ball head coach while interim coach Aaqib Javed was moved to the High-Performance Unit.
Now yet another potential shake-up is making headlines—this time in the Test team’s leadership. According to multiple Pakistani media outlets Shan Masood could be removed as Test captain before the home series against South Africa in October.
Citing sources close to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) reports suggest that Saud Shakeel is being seriously considered for the Test captaincy. While no official announcement has been made yet this possible leadership change is expected to be part of a broader restructuring of Pakistan’s Test setup. The board is also planning to appoint a new coaching staff and changing the captain is likely one piece of that larger reform.
Potential captain Saud Shakeel has had a solid year overall. He has cemented his place in the middle order of the Test team and boasts an average of over 50 since making his debut. His consistency and calm temperament have caught the attention of selectors. Additionally, Saud performed impressively as captain of Quetta Gladiators in the PSL. Given these factors the selectors are now seriously considering him for a long-term leadership role.
Pakistan’s next Test cycle begins in October when South Africa is scheduled to tour the country for a full series consisting of two Tests, three ODIs and three T20Is. However, the PCB aims to finalize the new Test captain well before the series begins to allow ample time for preparation.
