Cricket Australia has announced that David Boon will serve as the organization’s interim chair starting October 28. This transition follows the decision by the outgoing chair, Mike Baird, to step down from his position at the conclusion of the upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM).
Baird, who served as a board member for six years and as chair since February 2023, confirmed he would not seek re-appointment. Describing his time with the board as a proud period of oversight, Baird highlighted several achievements during his tenure, including record-breaking revenue, profit, attendance, and viewership numbers. He also noted a significant 40 percent increase in participation over the last four years and expressed confidence in the long-term sustainability of the Big Bash League.
Reflecting on his departure, Baird thanked the volunteers, fans, and club cricketers who sustain the game. He also paid tribute to Australia’s national captains—Pat Cummins, Mitch Marsh, Alyssa Healy, and Sophie Molineux—for their leadership and character. Additionally, Baird praised CEO Todd Greenberg, calling him the nation’s premier sports administrator.
David Boon, who joined the Cricket Australia board in February 2025, brings a wealth of administrative experience to the role. His background includes a nine-year stint as a director for Cricket Tasmania, three of which were spent as its chair, as well as service on the Australian Selection Panel between 2000 and 2011. Boon has also previously worked as an ICC match referee.
Expressing his gratitude for the opportunity, Boon stated, “It is an enormous honour to take the role of Interim CA Chair during what is a hugely exciting and also challenging time for cricket.” He pledged to lead the board toward decisions that bolster the game’s future health and advance Australia’s interests on the international stage. Boon also extended his sincere thanks to Baird for his dedicated advocacy for the sport from the grassroots level up to the boardroom.
Cricket Australia has confirmed that a formal process to appoint a permanent chair will commence in the months following the AGM. In the interim, Baird is working alongside Boon to ensure a smooth leadership transition over the coming weeks.
