Fenerbahce head coach Ismail Kartal announced his resignation following a distressing incident during Thursday’s 1-1 Champions League draw against Roma, where a spectator struck him in the head with a water bottle. The 65-year-old manager declared during a post-match press conference that he was departing “never to return,” explaining that he had made the choice “to clear the way for the club.”
However, the resignation was swiftly overruled by Fenerbahce president Aziz Yildirim. Speaking to reporters shortly after the announcement, Yildirim confirmed that Kartal “continues in his role.” The president acknowledged the coach’s frustration, noting that Kartal had expressed concerns regarding the bottle-throwing incident and the general pressure surrounding his position. Yildirim dismissed the idea of a formal debate over the coach’s future, stating, “I am his senior, I told him to continue and that’s it. We are a family.”
In response to the security breach, the Istanbul-based club confirmed via social media that the individual responsible for throwing the bottle has been identified and subsequently banned from the stadium. The club emphasized its commitment to maintaining order following the hostile act.
Kartal, a former Fenerbahce player who spent a decade at the club, is currently in his fourth managerial spell with the team, having returned this past June. His history with the club includes stints as head coach in 2014-15 and 2021-22, as well as serving as an assistant manager during the club’s last two Super Lig title-winning campaigns. Under his leadership, Fenerbahce has secured second place in the Turkish top flight for five consecutive seasons and achieved qualification for the Champions League league phase for the first time in 18 years. The report also notes that kartal, who spent a decade at Fenerbahce as a player, coached the club in 2014-15, then on an interim basis in 2021-22 before returning for a full campaign in 2023-24.
