Two-time Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso has confirmed his continuation with Aston Martin for at least another season, with the team officially announcing an unchanged driver lineup for the 2027 campaign. This extension puts an end to recent speculation regarding the Spaniard’s future and ensures he will continue competing well past his 46th birthday in July.
Reflecting on his decision, the veteran racer emphasized his enduring drive, stating that while he took time to deliberate, racing remains his life and passion. He expressed confidence in his current ability to perform at the highest level, noting that his motivation is fueled by the fun of the sport and remaining objectives. Alonso joined the team in 2023, subsequently securing eight podiums and two second-place finishes for the Silverstone-based outfit.
However, the current season has proven challenging for the team, which currently sits 10th in the standings out of 11 competitors. Utilizing a Honda power unit, the team has managed to secure only three points across 15 rounds, all of which were earned by Alonso. Despite these struggles, the driver maintains a strong belief in the team’s long-term vision, citing the organization’s strong leadership, infrastructure, and personnel as reasons for his commitment. “I’m committed for the long term with this team and to helping us succeed,” he added in the statement.
Before confirming his stay, Alonso had openly considered alternative career paths, including potential shifts in his role within the team or exploring outside challenges like the Dakar Rally and a return to the Indianapolis 500. Ultimately, his focus remained on Aston Martin’s competitive growth.
Team owner Lawrence Stroll welcomed the decision, asserting that retaining two experienced drivers is essential for a team with championship aspirations. Lance Stroll, the owner’s son, will continue to race alongside Alonso for a fifth consecutive year. Lawrence Stroll acknowledged the immediate need to improve car performance while reiterating that the organization possesses the necessary world-class talent to meet its long-term objectives.
