FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee has issued suspensions to three key members of the Egyptian national team following their explosive criticism of refereeing during a World Cup match. Head coach Hossam Hassan and his brother Ibrahim, who serves as the team manager, have each been handed three-match bans, while forward Mostafa Zico has received a more severe five-match suspension.
The penalties stem from the aftermath of Egypt’s round-of-16 defeat to Argentina in Atlanta on July 6. Who came from 2-0 down to win the tense encounter in Atlanta, United States, on July 6, egypt were knocked out in the round of 16 by Argentina.
Despite taking a 2-0 lead, the Pharaohs saw their tournament hopes vanish as Argentina mounted a second-half comeback to secure a victory.
The match was marred by intense frustration from the Egyptian camp regarding several officiating decisions, most notably a disallowed goal and a denied penalty appeal.
During a post-match press conference, a visibly furious Hossam Hassan did not hold back his frustrations. He stated, “I do not want to put it nicely and talk about hard luck. We have been cheated unfairly today; we have suffered injustice,” while also claiming that “there has not been respect or fair play” during the encounter.
The controversy centered on a VAR intervention that overturned a goal scored by Zico early in the second half, citing a foul on Lisandro Martinez that occurred earlier in the play. Additionally, Egypt felt aggrieved when their claims for a penalty—following an alleged shirt pull on Hamdy Fathy by Alexis Mac Allister—were ignored by officials in the buildup to Enzo Fernandez’s decisive goal for Argentina. Including a disallowed goal early in the second half, and a member of their coaching staff was red-carded in the aftermath of the winning goal, the Pharaohs were left furious after a number of controversial calls went against them. Egypt had a Zico goal ruled out when they were leading 1-0 as the video assistant referee (VAR) intervened to spot a foul on Lisandro Martinez much earlier in the move. Zico then put Egypt on the brink of a place in the last eight for the first time by doubling their lead. Before Egypt’s players appealed for a penalty near the end when the score was 2-2, zico had a goal ruled out for a foul in the build-up. However, the defending champions hit back as Cristian Romero reduced the arrears before Lionel Messi, who had a first-half penalty saved, smashed in the equaliser with his eighth goal of the tournament.
The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) confirmed the disciplinary actions on Monday and noted that they have formally requested the committee provide “the detailed reasons and justifications for the decisions.” The association is currently reviewing the legal ramifications of the ruling with intentions to file an appeal. The national football body is planning to appeal after assessing the legal aspects of the punishment.
If the suspensions stand, both Hossam and Ibrahim Hassan will be sidelined for Egypt’s upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Malawi this November, as well as their opening international fixture in March. For Zico, the five-match ban means he will remain unavailable for selection until June.
In defense of the match officials, FIFA’s head of refereeing, Pierluigi Collina, rejected the criticism leveled against his team. He warned that such public allegations are not only unfounded but can also incite harassment and pose significant threats to the safety of referees and their families.
