The International Cricket Council and Cricket South Africa are set to announce the official schedule for the 2027 Cricket World Cup in Cape Town on Thursday, October 1. This event coincides with the one-year countdown to the tournament, which is scheduled to commence on October 2, 2027—coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti—and conclude on November 21, 2027. According to the World Cup, as previously, By on August 15, will begin on October 2 — the Gandhi Jayanti Day — next year.
By the September 30 qualification deadline, 10 of the 14 participating nations will be finalized. This group includes tournament hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe, while eight additional teams will secure their berths based on ICC ODI rankings. The remaining four spots will be filled by teams emerging from qualifier rounds, appearing in the schedule as placeholders labeled Qualifier 1 through 4. Although Namibia is also a host nation, their automatic qualification remains unconfirmed. The cut-off date for qualification, ten of the 14 teams taking part in the World Cup will have been identified by September 30. Current projections for the eight ranking-based spots include India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Australia, England, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh. Meanwhile, the West Indies must navigate qualifiers early next year to secure their place in the tournament.
To mark the schedule release, the ICC is opening the registration process for the World Cup ticket ballot on October 1. While immediate ticket purchases will not be available, fans can sign up to participate in the upcoming allocation process through the official platform.
The tournament structure has been designed with three distinct phases ahead of the knockout rounds. Competition begins with a Super Series involving the three lowest-ranked qualified teams in a round-robin format, with the winner advancing. This is followed by a second round featuring 12 teams split into two groups of six for a round-robin stage. The top three sides from each group, plus the next highest-ranked team across both, will proceed to the Super 7 stage.
The Super 7 stage involves 21 round-robin matches to determine the top four semi-finalists. In the semi-finals, the first-placed team in the Super 7 standings will meet the fourth-placed side, while the second and third-ranked teams will face off in the other encounter to decide the finalists. The winners of the two semi-finals will compete in the final for the ultimate prize.
