British number one Katie Boulter saw her US Open campaign come to an abrupt end in the second round, falling to a 6-1 6-0 defeat against Czech seventh seed Karolina Muchova. The match, which lasted only 58 minutes, was relocated to the 14,000-capacity Louis Armstrong Stadium following heavy rainfall in New York.
Reflecting on the performance, Boulter described the experience as a “bad day at the office – times two.” She admitted that the environment played a significant role in her struggles, noting, “I struggled with the conditions. I struggled with the roof, the noise, I let things distract me. I let it get to me. I’m not usually aware of everything going on. It made me feel a little bit uncomfortable. I have to deal with it better.”
Boulter’s service game proved particularly problematic throughout the contest. The 30-year-old failed to record an ace, committed eight double faults, and secured only 33% of points on her first serve. She was unable to save any of the seven break points she faced, while her unforced error count reached 22 against just four winners.
In contrast, two-time US Open semi-finalist Muchova delivered a dominant display, firing 14 winners with only nine unforced errors. Her tactical use of drop shots and precise groundstrokes kept the British player under constant pressure.
Former world number five Daniela Hantuchova expressed concern regarding Boulter’s current form, telling Radio 5 Live that the player needs to make significant adjustments. “I would be really humbled, I would sit down with my team and say ‘OK, we need to change something big time’,” Hantuchova said. She emphasized that the serve, in particular, requires immediate attention, adding, “If I am Boulter, I would be on the practice court tomorrow. If she still wants to invest everything into her tennis then she needs to be on the court.”
The defeat marks a challenging season for the world number 62, who has managed only two victories across the four Grand Slam tournaments this year. Since her first-round exit at Wimbledon, Boulter has won just two of her six matches.
While Boulter celebrated a personal milestone in July by marrying world number seven Alex de Minaur, her professional results have remained inconsistent. The broader British contingent saw mixed fortunes on Wednesday; Jacob Fearnley and Toby Samuel were both eliminated from the men’s draw after losing to seeded opponents Tomas Martin Etcheverry and Jiri Lehecka, respectively.
However, Francesca Jones provided a positive note for the British camp, successfully completing her first-round match against Poland’s Magda Linette after play was suspended due to rain on Tuesday. The report also notes that as Boulter fell to a swift 6-1 6-0 defeat by the Czech seventh seed, but fans who had counted themselves lucky to have gained a third match on their day session ticket may have been left feeling short-changed.
